Budget and taxes

Much of CFPC's work on tax and budget issues is done through the Iowa Fiscal Partnership, CFPC's joint effort with the Iowa City-based Iowa Policy Project. IFP aims to provide reliable information and analysis on tax and budget policies affecting Iowans. It does so by examining and reporting on public policies to enhance economic opportunity for Iowa’s low-income and working families and to provide adequate revenue -- equitably raised -- for essential public services. The Iowa Fiscal Partnership is part of the State Fiscal Analysis Initiative (SFAI), a network of state-level organizations coordinated by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

CFPC's advocacy initiative, Every Child Counts, is a key actor at the Iowa Capitol on a variety of the state budget and tax policies.

Project highlight

For the 2013 legislative session, CFPC produced a fact sheet on why Iowa should raise the state earned income tax credit. The fact sheet was done on behalf of the Iowa Human Needs Advocates, a coalition of professional, service, church, labor, and advocacy organizations, including CFPC and its advocacy arm, Every Child Counts. As a result of work by many interested groups, including Every Child Counts and the Human Needs Advocates, state lawmakers raised Iowa's EITC from 7 percent of the federal credit to 15 percent.
