Senator Tom Harkin holds Des Moines field hearing on early-childhood programs

CFPC staff members were in attendance at a field hearing of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, entitled "Doing What's Right: Preparing Iowa's Children for Success in School and Beyond." The hearing was held on March 10 at Mitchell Early Learning Center in Des Moines.

Speakers at the morning event, held by Senator Tom Harkin, who chairs the HELP committee, included:

  • State Senator Herman C. Quirmbach of Ames
  • Susan Guest, Director of Early Childhood Programs, Des Moines Public Schools
  • Barbara Merrill, Executive Director, Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children
  • Christi Regan, Head Start Director, Hawkeye Area Community Action Program, Inc., of Hiawatha
  • Gabriela Gallentine, Director of Hispanic Educational Resources, Conmigo Early Education Center in Des Moines
  • Douglas M. Pierce, Brigadier General, US Air Force (Retired), Mission: Readiness, of Norwalk

Senator Harkin recently introduced the Strong Start for America’s Children Act, which would increase access to and quality of early-childhood programs. The bill focuses on boosting funding for high-quality preschool programs serving low- and moderate-income families; increasing the quality of infant and toddler care; supporting broad-scale quality improvements to child care programs; and encouraging continued support for the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program.
