Statement: New Iowa DHS Director must prioritize child and family well-being

We hope Governor Reynolds’ appointment of Kelly Kennedy Garcia as the new director of Iowa Department of Human Services marks a significant step toward making the needs of Iowa kids and families the top priority for the agency. Several DHS initiatives warrant Director Garcia’s immediate attention:

  • Fix Iowa’s Medicaid system to ensure Iowans covered by the program have access to affordable, timely and quality health care.
  • Address Iowa’s child care crisis: dwindling access, skyrocketing costs and providers unable to earn a living wage.
  • Guarantee the well-being of children in the foster care system by prioritizing family or family-like placements and by providing them with ongoing support when they leave the system.
  • Protect important safety-net supports that help assure every Iowan can put food on the table and can meet their family’ basic needs.

This is a critical moment for the state’s largest department. We hope Director Garcia has the courage and vision — and support of the Governor’s office — to reach this important goal.
