Equity and diversity

Iowa and the U.S. as a whole are becoming more racially and ethnically diverse, and children are leading the way. CFPC works with the BUILD Initiative as well as with Iowa partners to include diversity and equity concerns into all areas of child-policy advocacy.

These efforts include engaging in public education on the growing diversity of the child population and the need to foster equity and diversity; promoting attention to dual-language learners in the early-elementary years; building a culturally and linguistically responsive early-childhood system; and highlighting best practices and policies, state learning experiences, and key challenges and opportunities to meet the needs of all children in a multiethnic society.

CFPC's Kids Count Special Report, "And Children Lead the Way: Diversity and Population Change in Iowa," highlighted significant population shifts that occurred within the state from 2000 to 2010, especially among the state’s youngest residents and communities of color. It tallies population shifts by age and race for the United States, Iowa and Iowa’s 99 counties, and for five major Iowa cities and their surrounding areas
