In 1991, the Child and Family Policy Center became one of five state organizations in the nation to receive funding from the Annie E. Casey Foundation to become state Kids Count grantees.  Iowa Kids Count annually updates and disseminates national, statewide and county-level trend data on key indicators of well-being for Iowa children, ranging from health to education to welfare.

All 50 states now have state Kids Count grants, but Iowa Kids Count continues to be a leader in developing special reports and analyses regarding children and child policy, including provideing neighborhood-level indicators and focusing upon the growing diversity of Iowa's child population.
